Jazz Around the World - 6-8:30PM SLT

This past weekend, I (Carter) had the pleasure of attending my third Newport Jazz Festival. And, as has become a sort of Monday Night World Music tradition, my first show after the festival is an adventure in international jazz.

Tonight's set will include selections from three new (to me) artists whom I heard for the first time at the festival. You'll hear Regina Carter, a violin player whose band includes an accordion and a kora, the traditional string instrument from Mali. Also in the mix, a sneak peek at Miguel Zenón's new album of jazz grooves inspired by Puerto Rico. And there will be music from Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen.

Also in the world-jazz mix, South Africa's Hugh Masekela; some Indo-Jazz fusion from the likes of Rudresh Mahanthappa and Vijay Iyer; and much, much more. This is a set you don't want to miss. So come hang out and enjoy the grooves tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can find us in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: https://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/World%20music

New(ish) Music Grab Bag - Monday Night World Music 6-8:30PM SLT

I've been picking up lots of music again of late. For tonight's Monday Night World Music we'll have a little worldbeat grab bag where I'll highlight some of these recent acquisitions. Included in the mix - selections from Radio Africa, the recent album of Freshlyground, a fantastic South African band I had the great pleasure of hearing live a couple of weeks ago; the smooth sounds of Brazil's CéU, on her 2009 album Vagarosa; and the mesmerizing voice of Algeria's Souad Massi on her 2008 release Honeysuckle. Also in the mix - lots of great Rai (fusion from North Africa), Afrobeat, and other odds and ends.

It's not all brand new music, but it's all new to me, and that means it's to new Monday Night World Music too. And tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT I'll be queuing it all up to share with you. Come by for a selection of "new to us" tunes, most of which have never been featured on the show before.

Come hang out with me (Carter) and enjoy the newness! You can join us in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: https://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/World%20music

Rhythm & Jews - Monday Night World Music - 6-8:30PM SLT

I have played music from all over the world in my slot on thap gump, and I've done shows that honor the festivals of many cultures, from Cinco de Mayo to Diwali to Eid. But I've never done a set that focused on the music of my people.

For the past week, though, I've been observing Passover, and so I thought it would be a good time, for a change, to put together a show all about my own roots. And so tonight's Monday Night World Music brings you a set of Jewish music, Israeli pop, and a few excursions to the lands of my ancestors, Eastern Europe and Morocco.

You'll hear klezmer (like the Klezmatics, from whom I borrowed the title of this post), modern interpretations of Sephardic music (including Yasmin Levy and Deleon), a few traditional Passover songs, Israeli pop legends like Teapacks and Ofra Haza, and much more.

So come hang out and shep naches with us, tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can join me (Carter) in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: https://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/World%20music

Holi he! Springtime, Bollywood style - 6-8:30 PM SLT

This past weekend marked the Hindu festival of Holi, where Indians of many backgrounds celebrate the arrival of spring with music, dancing, and bright colors. Celebrations include the flinging of colored powder or dye that covers everything and everyone. The bright colors lend themselves to spectacular visuals, which is why Holi celebrations are a common backdrop for cheery production numbers in the films of Bollywood.

And in honor of Holi, tonight's Monday Night World Music explores some of those songs. Tonight from 6-8:30 PM SLT, you can hear a raucus set of the best of Bollywood, focusing on Holi songs, from the 1950s to today.

So grab your brightest colors and come join us for this musical celebration of the colors of spring, tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can join Carter in Second Life at Madhu's Cafe Indien. Or, listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: https://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/World%20music

Khalas - Music of the Revolution - Monday 6-8:30PM SLT

It's a time of historic change in the Arab world, with pro-democracy uprisings in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and beyond. Tonight, Monday Night World Music turns our ears toward that turbulent part of the world, with a celebratory musical adventure into music of North Africa and all over the Middle East.

Tonight's set will feature brand new music inspired by - and inspiring to - the protesters themselves, the people out in the streets fighting for change. Tonight's set includes selections from Khalas Mix Tape Vol. 1, a collection of revolutionary hip-hop released on the Internet last month and featuring the likes of El General (Tunisia), Lofti Double Kanon (Algeria), and Ramy Donjewan (Egypt). Also featured - a revolution-inspired remix by Natacha Atlas, a protest song by Tunisian rapper Balti, and more.

In addition to these recent political songs, we'll be delving into Monday Night World Music's diverse collection of North African, Arabic, Israeli, Turkish, and Persian music as well.

So hop on your magic carpet and come join us for this musical trip to the Middle East, tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can join Carter in Second Life at Madhu's Cafe Indien. Tonight I'll take a break from the worldpop and worldbeat sorts of sounds I usually play, and delve into my (modest but growing) collection of jazz from around the world.

New Music Sampler - Monday Night World Music

I've picked up a lot of music in the last month or two. Much of it is brand new stuff - like the new albums from Asa (Nigeria), Rachid Taha (Algeria), or Ana Tijoux (Chile/France). Some of it is not so new, like a terrific Putumayo compilation of Turkish pop-dance hits, a sampler of recent downtempo grooves from the Four Corners record label, or a fun record by Pakistani pop superstar Ali Zafar.

At any rate, it's all new to me, and that means it's to new Monday Night World Music too. And tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT I'll be queuing it all up to share with you. Come by for a selection of "new to us" tunes, most of which have never been featured on the show before. In addition to the stuff listed above, there you'll hear music from India, Brazil, Japan, Israel, and much more.

Come hang out with me (Carter) and enjoy the newness! You can join us in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: https://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/World%20music

Bollywood Then & Now - Monday Night World Music 6-8:30PM SLT

This week marks the 3rd anniversary of the original incarnation of Madhu's Cafe, the home of Monday Night World music. And what better way to celebrate than to return to Madhu's Cafe's roots: the music of Bollywood.

"Bollywood" is a catch-all term for the mainstream Hindi-language movie industry centered in Mumbai. The songs from these movies have been part of the heart of Indian popular music for many decades. Tonight's Monday Night World Music explores these diverse and brilliant sounds from the evergreen hits of the 1950s right up to the brand new music of today's movies.

The ear-catching, foot-tapping music of Bollywood blends traditional Indian sounds with everything from big-band jazz to rock-and-roll - and then some - to create an addictive, uniquely Indian style.

Come hang out with me (Carter) and enjoy the masala tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. Indian dress encouraged but completely optional.
