We cross genres and periods with abandon today. You'll hear electronic realisations thanks to the likes of Wendy Carlos and Tomita. Sixties and seventies classic rock from Dutch bands Ekseption and Trace, both founded by classically-trained organist Rick van der Linden. You'll hear the jazz arrangements of David Rees-Williams and Warren Bernhardt. The steampunk sounds of Vernian Process, and the neo-goth screaming virtuosic solos of Emilie Autumn. Then there's Trance Opera. Not to mention some rocked-up Renaissance and Mediaeval material.
We'll go the other way too, with Metallica arranged for four cellos, a Mediaeval tribute to Black Sabbath (and a snatch of Jumi Hendrix), and Frank Zappa arranged for chamber orchestra by The Muffin Men. Today's seques will sometimes be very, very dramatic.
