From the Library - CineSound

Both the big screen and the small screens of film and television rely heavily on music to set the tone of their stories. Today, with only a few notable exceptions, both film and TV will try and have a single piece of music that defines the story. This is the theme. Sometimes the memorable piece from the film is the end credits, other times it's the opening sequence. For TV the start and finish are often the same.

Music is what helps give a movie the right mood. The right score for a scene can make a powerful piece of cinema. And the right tune for a theme can help make a movie so memorable you'll be humming the tune all day. Just think on your favourites, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws (John Williams has to have some sort of an award for the sheer number of memorable themes) even the cheesy movies can have great soundtracks.
