Tonight Monday Night World Music returns to Madhu's Cafe Indien's roots with the music of Bollywood - the mainstream Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai. Come find out why I think this is some of the best music in the world - and why there is nothing else quite like it.

Come hang out with Carter and enjoy the masala tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can join Carter in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there! Holi he! Springtime, Bollywood style - 6-8:30 PM SLT

This past weekend marked the Hindu festival of Holi, where Indians of many backgrounds celebrate the arrival of spring with music, dancing, and bright colors. Celebrations include the flinging of colored powder or dye that covers everything and everyone. The bright colors lend themselves to spectacular visuals, which is why Holi celebrations are a common backdrop for cheery production numbers in the films of Bollywood.

And in honor of Holi, tonight's Monday Night World Music explores some of those songs. Tonight from 6-8:30 PM SLT, you can hear a raucus set of the best of Bollywood, focusing on Holi songs, from the 1950s to today.

So grab your brightest colors and come join us for this musical celebration of the colors of spring, tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can join Carter in Second Life at Madhu's Cafe Indien. Or, listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: http://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/India

Bollywood Then & Now - Monday Night World Music 6-8:30PM SLT

This week marks the 3rd anniversary of the original incarnation of Madhu's Cafe, the home of Monday Night World music. And what better way to celebrate than to return to Madhu's Cafe's roots: the music of Bollywood.

"Bollywood" is a catch-all term for the mainstream Hindi-language movie industry centered in Mumbai. The songs from these movies have been part of the heart of Indian popular music for many decades. Tonight's Monday Night World Music explores these diverse and brilliant sounds from the evergreen hits of the 1950s right up to the brand new music of today's movies.

If you've never heard Indian popular music this is a great chance to hear some of the best music in the world. And if you have heard it, you know why I call it that! The ear-catching, foot-tapping music of Bollywood blends traditional Indian sounds with everything from big-band jazz to rock-and-roll - and then some - to create an addictive, uniquely Indian style.

Come hang out with me (Carter) and enjoy the masala tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. Indian dress encouraged but completely optional. You can join us in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: http://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/India

Monday Night World Music - Eid Mubarak! Sufi styles

This past weekend marked the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr, the end of the holy month of Ramadan and a joyful day of feasts and prayer. In honor of Eid, tonight's Monday Night World Music will feature music inspired by Sufi traditions, a mystical and musical strain of Islam.

Focusing on music from North India and Pakistan, we will hear traditional qawwalis - mystical, poetic, and energetic love songs - such as the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and others. We will also hear some exemplars of Bollywood's take on the qawwali form, both in traditional style and modern versions sometimes called "techno qawwali" or "disco qawwali." And, we will hear some pop music after the sufi tradition, such as the energetic and beautiful songs of Kailash Kher.

Come hang out with Carter and enjoy the spiritual sounds tonight from 6-8:30PM SLT. You can join Carter in world at Madhu's Cafe Indien, or listen in on thap gump's main stream. Hope to see you there!Source URL: http://idontwanttobeanythingotherthanme.blogspot.com/search/label/India
