Main: Masters of the Baroque—English Composers

From the Library: Bach and the Masters of the Baroque

Today's programme on our Main Stream features music from the Baroque era and while it features the music of J S Bach, it also includes many other composers of the period, both well-known and seldom-heard. So in amongst the famous works today, we hope you'll hear some music you've never heard before.

Listeners may find it strange to learn that during his lifetime Bach was thought somewhat old-fashioned and behind the times, as other composers adopted more decorated rococo styles. Today, of course, it's a different matter and there is a vast library of recordings of his work available, a selection of which we will hear during the programme.

Then at 7pm and 3am UK time (11am and 7pm Pacific) join us for the ZBS Radio Hour (see separate entry).
Today's programme is presented by Elrik Merlin and produced by thap gump in conjunction with our friends at the Alexandrian Free Library Consortium of Second Life. You can listen to the programme in-world now at http://main.radioriel.org, or simply click here to start your player, if your browser is configured to do so. Main: From the Library - God Save the King!

Today marks two rather interesting musical anniversaries. This day in 1628 saw the death of John Bull, the composer believed to have writen the melody to England's National Anthem, God Save the King (or Queen, as appropriate). It was also the birth, in 1710, of Thomas Augustine Arne, the composer of Rule Britannia. Thus it's an appropriate day to present a programme of ceremonial music from the Renaissance period, through the Baroque to modern times. You'll hear processional music, music for royal events, military pieces and a great deal more, all with a sense of ceremony and pomp about it. And we'll be playing other pieces of music from composers known for their ceremonial works, such as Walton and Elgar. Huzzah!

The image is of a hand-coloured woodcut, A Perspective View of the Magnificent Structure Erected in the Green Park for the Royal Fire Works exhibited the 27 of April 1749, on account of the General Peace. Handel's Music for the Royal Fireworks is, of course, included in today's programme.

    The ZBS Radio Hour

Then join us at 11am and 7pm Pacific Time, that's 19:00 and 03:00 GMT, for two exciting adventures from our friends at ZBS Foundation in the ZBS Radio Hour. At the top of the hour, Jack Flanders returns to where it all began - his aunt's mysterious Victorian mansion where all manner of strange goings-on unfurled and he discovered many other worlds both within and without, over 35 years ago, in Part 3 of Return to Inverness. Then at the bottom of the hour it's Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe, in Part 3 of Ruby 5.

    Off the Shelf

And join us at 1pm Pacific Time (21:00 GMT) for another edition of Off the Shelf, our regular series on books and the people who love them.Today, an interview with Donna Fletcher Crow, author of The Monastery Murders series. Read more about the programme at The Bookstacks.

From the Library - Antonio Vivaldi

Composer, priest, and virtuoso violinist, today marks the 333rd birthday of Antonio Vivaldi. Born in Venice, Vivaldi is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons.

In honour of his birthday, today's From the Library features music from the Baroque period with performances by modern groups such as the Bezdin Ensemble, The Sarasa Ensemble, Richard Savino and Janine Jansen. Music of Vivaldi's contemporaries such as Bach, Purcell and Handel is also included.

From the Library: Handel & his Contemporaries

This day in 1685 saw the birth of Georg Frideric Handel, one of the best-known composers of the Baroque era, and today we'll be featuring his music - including the famous Water Music and Fireworks suites and the Messiah - along with some carefully-chosen late Baroque contemporaries, such as Thomas Arne, John Blow, William Boyce, Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Domenico Scarlatti and Georg Philipp Telemann, and a touch of earlier music of the Baroque from Purcell and Scarlatti. J S Bach, born in the same year as Handel, really deserves his own programme - which he gets from time to time, so we trust his shade will not be particularly upset by the fact that his work does not appear today.

Handel was born in Germany and received a musical training in Italy before he moved to London and became a British subject. He was influenced by the Italian Baroque and German composers, but his own work was to impact many who came after him including Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart. He died in 1759. His music has remained popular until the present day, and particularly so during the Victorian era, when regular Handel festivals took place at the Crystal Palace in Sydenham, South London.

You can read more about Handel and his life in this Wikipedia article.

If it Ain't Baroquen...

Baroque has to be the ultimate in gilding the lily. Lots of ostentatious ornamentation, over the top allegorical artwork and grandiose buildings full of their own importance. But as with all things it was of it's time. Music too reflected a change in style with 17th century music becoming more aware of what could be done with coordinated instruments and less improvisation by the performers. New instruments were developed and ideas expanded upon.

Luminaries such as Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Alessandro Scarlatti, Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Arcangelo Corelli and Jean-Philippe Rameau contributed greatly to the sound of the age and would influence later composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, who moved music from the Baroque to the Classical.
