Today's programme is in 3/4 time, and explores the waltz as a musical form. But you'll hear a lot more than members of the Strauss family in today's programme. Instead the music comes from a great range of genres, from bluegrass and country to classics, ECD, folk, New Age, jazz, big band and much more. There are even bagpipes. You'll perhaps be surprised how all-pervasive the form can be.
Indeed, if you consult the Wikipedia entry on the Waltz, you'll find that the use of the word is not restricted to "waltzes": in the 19th century,"waltzing" referred to a gliding, turning movement in a dance, whatever that dance was. You would "waltz" while doing the polka, for example.
However today's programme does not exploit such technical loopholes... much. In virtually all cases today, the music is in 3/4 time and in many cases has the word "waltz" in the title. The different kinds of waltz from so many genres provides, we think you'll find, quite enough variety.
And don't forget, at 11am and 7pm Pacific Time, (7pm and 3am UK time), tune in for the fourth instalments of our exciting ZBS adventures, Dreams of Rio and Ruby 3: The Invisible World in The ZBS Radio Hour.
