From the Library—Highlands & Islands

Today on thap gump we present a programme of music from Scotland and the nearby islands that together have been both the source and the inspiration of great traditional and other music for centuries.

You'll hear both instrumental and vocal music today – plenty of bagpipes and fiddles of course; songs in both Gaelic and English; and both traditional and modern material. (To be fair, the programme includes music from all over Scotland, lowlands as well as highlands). The music today is broadly Celtic, but there are also artists in today's show who, while drawing on Celtic music traditions are not particularly characteristically Celtic in their sound. The programme is diverse and varied and should provide a day of enjoyable listening for all those with Scottish heritage or affinities.

This programme is dedicated to friend and colleague Soliel Snook, who has lived in the Scottish Highlands for many years and has introduced me to a great deal of magnificent music from the region. —EM
