Main: Mr Merlin's 4th Anniversary Music Machine

Hello everyone and welcome to thap gump's 4th anniversary! Yes, it's on this day in 2007 that thap gump began broadcasting to listeners in Second Life for just a few hours a day... and now in 2011 we have six streams broadcasting around the clock.

However, unlike previous years, we're holding on for our anniversary celebrations for just a few days, until the weekend - because on Sunday, June 5, from midnight to midnight Pacific Time, we're running the Second Annual Riel Day For Life, where we invite you, our listeners, to sponsor an hour and choose the music we play, all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life - the virtual worlds' biggest charity fundraiser. Please join us in raising as much money as we can for this worthy cause - full details are available here.

Meanwhile, as the actual anniversary has fallen on my watch, so to speak, today I'm going to be playing selections from some of the genres I both specialise in and enjoy most here on thap gump's Main Stream. So today you'll be hearing some of my favourite Early Music pieces. Some choice bits of Vicwardiana, including what is probably more or less the gloomiest ballad ever written. A good deal of Baroque music, both in the original and (in the case of Bach) with the assistance of Wendy Carlos's classic electronic realisations. Also on the electronic front we'll hear from Tomita, and from his sources, including Debussy and Holst. And you'll hear some other French and English composers such as Faure, Poulenc, Delius and Elgar. And talking of English composers, we'll hear from Walton, Ron Goodwin and some of the masters of British Light Music. And there's some Celtic material in the mix too, though largely of the orchestral variety. There's even some pop music. Quite a variety of music in today's programme, then: I do hope you enjoy the (rather bumpy) ride.

And on our Anniversary, all of us here at thap gump would like to thank all our kind sponsors who make our wide range of eclectic programming possible - and most of all, you, our listeners, who listen to our streams in increasing numbers, in-world or otherwise. Thank you to everyone.

I would personally like to thank my colleagues on the station for their wonderful work, especially our Founder and DG, Gabrielle Riel. And a special tip of the hat to Terry Lightfoot of To-a-T Designs for the stunning 4th Anniversary poster she's created, shown above - and for some other, equally stunning (and not entirely unrelated) artwork we expect to be unveiling very shortly.

Today's programme is presented by Elrik Merlin and produced by thap gump in conjunction with the Alexandrian Free Library Consortium of Second Life.
