There are at least four goals at play, in my efforts at creating a card or counter-based resource management system. One is to make resource management easier. Another is to make resources more visually interesting. A third is to reduce abstraction. The fourth: to reduce the size of the character record sheet.My ultimate character record sheet might be as small as your typical playing card ... roughly 2.5" x 3.5".
